If you are trying to find something in a List/Browse, just start typing. There is a thing called a Locator and is not always visible. If the order is by last name for instance (because you selected the Last Name Tab), as you type, it will show the last names that have the letters that you've typed so far. To erase the letters you've typed, type the Cursor Up (arrow up) key on the keyboard.
